River and Rainforest classes are for children aged 3-5. Each room is a double unit with 6 key people in each room (2 Class Teachers and 4 Early Years Educators). There are up to 60 children in each room for each session including a combination of part-time and full-time children. The classrooms are open-plan and children have access to free-flow play between the classrooms and our large outdoor area. We aim to create a calm, cosy, welcoming environment using natural, open ended resources. We have large spaces for the children to play in where they can create and interact for long periods of time.
The children have 1 or 2 small group times a day with their key person to share stories, play games and sing songs.
We have implemented planning in the moment so staff will talk to children and extend their learning during these interactions. They will introduce new language, new skills, and technology while investigating children’s questions. We encourage children to be active learners and solve problems with them supporting them with the thinking process. Each child will be a focus child once per term where we ask parents specifically to contribute photographs and comments about their child alongside the ongoing input into children’s learning journeys.
